Homemade Fun

Thanksgiving was a great time to relax, spend time with friends and family, and get fat. ;) This week we are back to school and gearing up for Christmas. I love making things at home and enjoy sewing, crafting, photography and baking. So this year I thought I would see what kind of homemade Christmas gifts I could come up with. Well considering I have the internet at my fingertips, I thought I'd look to see what kind of free holiday craft ideas were out there. Here are some of the ones I will be trying out in the next few weeks. Some are things I am going to do by myself, others are things that the kids can help with.

Try a few out and enjoy! I'll be posting my progress as the weeks go on.

Back to Life...Back to Reality

Today we are back into life full swing. We are starting back at schoolwork today, along with Dr. appointments, visiting with friends, and everything else. I was hoping that this past weekend was going to so incredibly easy, relaxing and smooth to prepare us for today. Well, I was wrong.

Saturday was a great day. We got to spend some time with one of my best friends and her soon to be little girls. It was a great time of fun and enjoying each others company. The kids were great and well behaved which made things super easy for me. Saturday afternoon we had some family time at home and ended the day by grilling out. That was how the whole weekend was supposed to go. Easy. Smooth. Stress Free.

Yeah right!!

Sunday came and like usual, Sunday is a whirlwind day for us. This particular Sunday was more so than most. I played the 2 morning services at church, and Jon was at work, so I had to take the kids super early to church. They did pretty well. But you know how sometimes it just takes one bad, off hand comment to ruin your whole morning? Well yeah, that happened. I'm not sure if it was something I was meant to hear, or if they didn't know I was there, but the comments made put me in a foul mood. It took me most of the morning to snap out of it, but by lunch time, I was feeling okay and ready for the rest of the day.

Now the problem with playing the morning services is that I only get about 2 hrs at home before I am back at church to get ready for the night service. Considering that this isn't an every week kind of thing, its not usually a huge deal. The kids were excited to go back to church, and that ALWAYS helps. So we get back to get my gear and something has grown legs and walked away. Cue foul mood. So I have no choice but to do without it for the time being. We head over and I set up what I can while the kids play. Tay has a wardrobe malfunction right before we start practice. Okay, no big deal. We deal with it and I'm back. Amara spills hot chocolate on the concrete floor. We clean it up. Amara walks outside the building and gets locked out, Tay finds her a little bit later. Then later, of course, they BOTH decide to go outside the building and get locked out! (the whole time I'm on stage assuming that they are in the building playing like they are supposed to be and can't see that they're locked out). So...I'd say its probably 15 minutes later that my friend finds them locked out. Tay is crying (and has been for a while). *sigh So now I have to discipline Amara for not obeying and calm Tay down before I take them to their classes. (are we having fun yet?!) I get a call that my belongings have grown legs and walked back (yeah! a highlight to my day!). When I pick up the kids Amara had thrown a chair and a fit, but was supposedly okay now. Yea, no. I get to her and she was throwing another fit. We calm down and go home, have dinner and go to bed.

Oh....but its not over yet!

2am Tay wakes me up and says she threw up in bed. Oh....the joy! So that was the end to our weekend.

Today is Monday. A day that I'm choosing to be a happy, joyous one. I know that this determination will get tested today. But after the weekend we had, it HAS to be a great day! I can't handle anything else!

Habakkuk 3:17-18
"Thought the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls-- Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvations."

My song for the week. Enjoy!

More Colorado Happenings...

So I promised that I would share more details about what we did while in Colorado. While there are some details that I won't share, there are many that I will. As you all know, we are homeschooling, which made this trip possible, because otherwise we would've had to stay home because of school. But being homeschoolers means we could take off, leave our books at home and do some "real life learning". And boy did we do a LOT of learning on the go! Tay got to start learning how to tell time (on a digital clock) because, well, theres not a whole lot to do in the car for 28 hrs! haha...but seriously, she did get to start figuring it all out. We also learned about why and how leaves turn colors, why it gets dark earlier, we learned about the states we drove through, and lots of other things. And that was just on the driving portion of our trip!

While in Colorado we got to do some fun stuff. The first big thing we did was go to the Denver Zoo. We love going to the zoo. Its fun and a great way to learn. There were lots of animals we'd never seen before and we got to read about them and learn how they were like other animals we knew about. I'd say the best part about going to the zoo was the primate exhibit. Okay, now some of you probably really like monkeys. Well, I'm kinda neutral on that subject. The reason this was the best part was because right in front of the primate exhibit were these 5 huge signs talking about evolution! In case you don't know, we don't believe in evolution, we believe in creation (that the God of the universe created us in His image). So the signs talked about how we are like primates (opposable thumbs, intelligence, etc). I could've ignored the signs (its not like the kids read well enough to have REALLY understood what they were saying), but instead I chose to use that moment as a teaching moment. I got to teach my kids that some people think we were once monkeys a long time ago (to which Amara said "thats dumb") but that we as Christians know that we came from a loving, patient God who created us in His image to be His children. Yes, we talked about similarities, but the main focus was on how we know that we aren't like the primates. Definitely a wonderful time with my girls and God blessed me so much with that experience!

We also got to go to a great pumpkin patch. The kids had SO much fun. They had a wagon ride out to the pumpkin patch where we picked out 3 pumpkins. They got to ride carts (kinda like go carts but pedals instead of a motor), get their faces painted, eat some yummy food and even do a HUGE (well huge to us) corn maze! I think their favorite part was trying to navigate through the corn field. I think in the end it took us twice as long as it should've to find half as many of the markers, but we all had fun (and Grandma- my mom) came with us, which made it very special for the girls. :)

The last big thing we did was go to the Royal Gorge. The Royal Gorge is kind of like a mini Grand Canyon. Its VERY cool. It's a suspension bridge that is over the gorge and is something like 1200 ft above the bottom of the gorge and you can drive or walk across it (we did both, and it was crazy scary driving across it!). It was a great reminder of God's glory and His mighty power.

Well, those are the big highlights of our trip to Colorado. While it was a sad time, we also had some good times and some experiences that we may not have the chance to do again. Although there were some things I wanted to do that we didn't get to, I'm thankful that we had the time we did there.

I'M BACK.......

It's been quite a long time since I last posted. And it wasn't that I was being lazy or anything, just life happening and I simply didn't have the time to post anything (well anything of substance anyways). So now I'm BACK! Not just back to the blog, but back home too. Here's the highlights of the past 2 months.

Counseling, Band, Band, double Dr. appt, Yardsale, Band, Dr, Swim, book club....
Worship, blood work, band, counseling, missions get together, catering, catering, catering....
band, swim, worship, band, counseling, band, meds, swim, book club, worship, band, counseling....
(and that was just the remainder of September!)

Catering, catering, swim, book club, worship, Tay's Birthday, counseling, Tay's Party...
night service started (band), swim, pick up meds, double doctor, worship, counseling...
catering, catering, catering, drove to CO for a funeral...
(and then the rest of October was spent in CO)

Okay, So now that you've all had a quick recap of whats been going on, I can get to some real stuff. Many of you were following my FB posts as me and the kids traversed the United States to go be with my family for my Grandfather's passing/funeral. But besides what I posted during my actual journey, I didn't say a lot about what was happening, or anything while I was actually there (mainly because my Grandmother doesn't have internet access so I was dependent on my phone's internet).

We went to Colorado with the intent to see my Grandfather (the kids Great- Grandfather) before he passed away. He has battled cancer for many years and was in his final days. The kids had never met him, and although these were not the ideal circumstances, we thought it was important for them to meet him and see him at least once. It took 3 LONG, BOOOORRIINNGGG days to get to CO. I drove farther and through more states than I had ever personally driven (and yes it was on my own, Jon couldn't get the time off work).

The girls got to spend a few hours at Hospice with my Grandpa when we got into town. For this I am VERY thankful. He was having a "good day" and was in good spirits. He was smiling and happy and excited to see them. That was on Wed, Oct 19 (we left VA Oct 17). On Sat, Oct 22 he passed away. We were able to see him that morning before he passed, but he was not all there when we did see him. During the next few days my entire family on my mom's side came into town. Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Great Cousins (or something like that) and tons of my Grandmother's friends. It was crazy! Tiny 4 bedroom house, and about 15 people staying there (and some at hotels). The funerals were nice. He was cremated and there was a Catholic Funeral (he was catholic, my grandmother is buddhist) and then a military funeral.

Even though we were in CO for such a sad occasion, we were able to have fun and do some fun things. I will get to some of the details of other events and happening later this week, so be looking for those posts! But overall, it was an.....interesting trip. Lots of pictures to come along with some crazy stories. Keep checking back for more. Thanks to all my friends who were praying for us during our trip. I appreciate it very much!
